Heading Home

Run in the Rowland Heights hills with Steve, to work off last night’s food.

2014-02-02 11.35.59 - Copy

I’m allergic to most of this stuff, but the Nin Go (fried in egg) and turnip cake in the middle are two of my favorite things about Chinese New Year!

2014-02-02 13.00.40 - Copy

For more insight on some of the Chinese New Year goodies we often eat, check out OpallaOnTrails’ great blog post, with recipes!  The rice cake, taro cake, turnip cake… all very similar to what I’ve grown up with here in California.

Here’s a little excerpt from her post regarding the reason for all the ‘cakes’:

The word Go is a homophone for “high” in the Chinese language. So the cakes are called Go, because anything that rises or is high (be it your salary, your rank, your grade or even the stock market) is supposed to be good.

Yay for knowledge!
Happy New Year everyone!

Long Beach!

Long days are one of the best things about summer.
Spent the afternoon in Long Beach paddle boating, then at the Aquarium.  :)

Anza-Borrego State Park

I’m thankful for – Day #17 – Adventures

My goal for this vacation was really to do as little as I possibly could.  Read, relax, sit at Starbucks, enjoy people’s company…
That said, every now and again you’ve gotta let people take you on an adventure to revive that sense of awe and wonder in all of us.

Henning and I joined Steve & co on a hike in the Anza-Borrego State Park, east of San Diego.  It was nice to be back to the desert for a day.

Video Games!

I’m thankful for – Day #15 – Video Games…

While it pains me to say this… I do think that video games have helped bring our family together, ever since we were little kids.  Now with easier control interfaces like Wii and Kinect, our parents have even gotten involved!

Below are some of our family’s Wii characters…  :P

We even ended up making characters for some of my other aunts and uncles.  What a hoot!

German Food & Beer

I’m thankful for – Day #14 – Henning + my family!

I love that my family loves Henning (and vice versa)!
After a nice workout, we went to eat German food with Stephen in Anaheim.  Then to Addison Homebrew, where Henning showed Stephen how to pick out the ingredients for the beer they’re going to brew tomorrow.

Rome

I wish we could have spent a lot more time here in Rome… but I’ll of course take what I can get.

I didn’t even try to pick one photo from Rome… because who knows if I’ll ever get to come back here…

I also won’t go into all of the fascinating history of the various buildings and structures… but if it interests you, I definitely recommend a few Google/Wiki searches…

Cruise – Day 3 – Ensenada

Horseback riding in the hills…

Walking through downtown Ensenada…

…priceless memories…

Highlight of the day: We stumbled upon a seafood restaurant called Mahi-Mahi.  Mango margaritas…

…scallop carpaccio

…fish ceviche…

…grilled octopus…

…oh yea…

After shamelessly stuffing ourselves with fresh seafood, we walked back to the ship.  I was surprised by some of the new construction.

First day off the ship!

Photo Aug 09, 3 27 25 PM

My mom, Steve and I went on a great walking tour around Avalon. Other members of the family opted to go parasailing and take a glass-bottom boat tour.

Allegedly, the most photographed mermaid in the world…

I thought Avalon was great.  I have a thing for colorful cities by the sea.  And the main forms of transportation are walking and golf carts…??  Even better!  I  could definitely live here one day.

After lunch, we all went kayaking around the island out past the Casino building.  Mmmm fun.  :)

Polar Bears!

My cousin Steve and his parents were in town for part of the week.  Our family has 2 specialties: eating and watching TV on the couch.  Tonight’s on-screen offering was Polar Bear: Spy on the Ice on Animal Planet (HD!), which was just incredible.  I highly recommend the film to anyone with a remote interest in polar bears.

If you aren’t able to catch the screenings on Animal Planet, here are a few clips.  #3 (Hunting Seals) is my personal favorite.  :)
